You might have heard of a mini-split air conditioning system before. In the past ten years or so, they have surged in popularity, and for good reason. Today we are going to go over what a mini split system actually is, and whether or not you may need one for your home.
A mini split system is an all in one heating and cooling system that is used to give you control of temps in an individual room or space, as opposed to a whole house unit like a central heating unit or air conditioner. Mini split systems have a main base unit, or "outdoor" unit, and one or more indoor unit pieces, or "heads". These heads hang on the wall of the room you want to heat/cool to allow individual temperature changes between areas. You may have heard of these units being described as ductless units.
There are many reasons why mini split systems have grown in popularity over the past few years. First of all, they are incredibly easy to install, usually just requiring a 3-4 inch access hole to be drilled through an exterior wall. This makes installation cleaner, quicker, and easier than a traditional unit.
Another reason that mini split systems have grown in popularity is that they are very energy efficient. Since they require little or no ductwork, you don't see the same level of energy loss that traditional systems have. They are also amazing choices if you have different rooms that need to be at different temperatures, or if you have certain rooms that you need to heat/cool and other rooms that you don't.
While usually used to heat or cool home additions, garages, sheds or other areas that do not have access to traditional units, mini split units have been popping up more and more on new construction units lately. They are awesome choices in most situations, although they can sometimes be a little bit expensive when it comes to up front costs.
